The terraced-window house, Ali Shah Mahmoudi
The terraced-window house is a project for redefining ribbon window and rediscovering hidden possibilities of open floor plan and façade.
At first, the project was a domino structure, regardless of placing a yard, with maximum capacity of construction. The main issue of the design process was that how we can make maximum intervention in the space in order to improve the quality of the house, having the existing components. In order to solve this problem, we examined the window as a spatial element, regarless of its functional nature, in a way that it expanded throughout the whole facade, with its fluid and continuous uncertain movement. Locating these windows are based on the new experience of their presence in the interior spaces (bottom, middle and top of the walls) and forming new behavioural acts affected by them.
In developing design process in order to improve the quality of the house, based on yard-oriented idea and according to limitations of the existing situation, we tried to penetrate some open spaces in interaction with interior spaces in different parts of the project. We named these open spaces Small Terraces, which symbolically mark and remind their lost existence of yard. These small terraces were born in spatial combination with earlier-mentioned windows.
The terraced-windows, searching new possibilities in open floor plan and facade, made the main design part their own like an independent object with horizontal and vertical movements and their presence in plan and facade, searching new life for the project.
We used brick as the main and only material for facades, totally pure and without using any patterns,
